About
About EmbassyPin
EmbassyPin is an independent, free map and directory of foreign embassies, consulates and UN permanent missions in New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Miami. We built it because finding the right office, address and opening hours usually means digging through outdated lists and slow government websites.
Where the data comes from
- OpenStreetMap (via the Overpass API) – offices tagged
office=diplomaticin each city's search area (New York: New York City (5 boroughs); Washington, DC: District of Columbia; Los Angeles: Los Angeles County (incl. Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Glendale); Chicago: Cook County (incl. Evanston); Houston: Harris County; Miami: Miami-Dade County (incl. Coral Gables)). Ambassadors' residences, cultural centers and defence offices are excluded. © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL. - Wikidata – embassies, consulates and permanent missions located in those areas (CC0). Items marked as closed are excluded.
- NYC311 – the City of New York's public list of consulates, including opening hours (New York only).
- U.S. Department of State consular-notification lists for NY, DC, CA, IL, TX and FL – used only to check which countries we are still missing.
- NYC Planning Labs GeoSearch (New York) and Nominatim (other cities) – to place a pin when a source gives an address but no coordinates.
How records are checked
Every record shows which source each field came from and the date it was last checked against those sources. When sources disagree we show the most authoritative value (City of New York first where available, then OpenStreetMap, then Wikidata) and list the alternatives on the page. We never fill in a field we don't have a source for – it stays blank. An automatic link checker flags official websites that stop working or redirect elsewhere.
“Last checked” means re-checked against the listed public sources, not confirmed by the consulate. Always confirm with the office before visiting.
Report a change
If a consulate has moved, changed its hours or website, use our correction form and include a link to an official source.
