Who qualifies for an urgent appointment

  • Urgent travel: you are traveling abroad within 14 calendar days, or you need a foreign visa within 28 calendar days.
  • Life-or-death emergency: you must travel abroad within 2 weeks because an immediate family member outside the United States has died, is dying or in hospice care, or has a life-threatening illness or injury. Immediate family means parents or legal guardians, children, spouses, siblings and grandparents – not aunts, uncles or cousins. Bring proof such as a death certificate, a statement from a mortuary, or a signed letter from the hospital on letterhead (professionally translated if it isn’t in English). Life-or-death emergency rules
  • Traveling in 2–6 weeks? You don’t need an agency: choose expedited service at an acceptance facility or by mail. It takes 2–3 weeks plus up to 2 weeks of mailing time and costs an extra $60. Routine service takes 4–6 weeks plus mailing.

How to book

Appointments are free. The State Department says any request to pay for an appointment should be treated as fraud. It is not affiliated with third-party booking services and may not honor appointments booked through them. Don’t book duplicate appointments.

If you haven’t applied yet

  1. Open the Online Passport Appointment System and enter your travel plans to see if you qualify. You can book for up to 7 people in your household.
  2. Enter the code sent to your email (check spam), then the code sent by text message to your mobile phone.
  3. Choose a date and time. The slot is held for 15 minutes – confirm it in time or you’ll have to start over. A confirmation email follows.
  4. To cancel or change, use the link in the confirmation email.

If you already applied

Call 877-487-2778 (Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–10 p.m. ET, Sat–Sun 10 a.m.–3 p.m. ET). If there is time to issue your passport before you travel, they’ll alert the agency working on it; if not, they’ll book an appointment for you. The first 2 digits of your 9-digit application locator number show which agency has your application – for this one, 55. Appointments can’t be transferred to another person.

Life-or-death emergencies: try online first; otherwise call 877-487-2778 Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–5 p.m. ET, or 202-647-4000 on weekends, federal holidays and after 5 p.m. ET on weekdays.

What to bring

  • Printed confirmation of your appointment.
  • Printed proof of international travel – a flight receipt or itinerary; if you’re driving or going by boat to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean, a hotel reservation, cruise or bus tickets, or international car insurance.
  • Your application form, filled out and printed (all first-time and renewal forms are accepted; the fee and form calculator tells you which one you need).
  • All supporting documents for that form, including the original and a photocopy of your citizenship evidence and photo ID.
  • A passport photo.
  • The application fee plus the $60 expedite fee, paid by credit card, debit card (not ATM cards) or contactless payment such as Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay.

Who should come

For a child under 16, both parents or guardians and the child must attend. You may bring someone to help, such as an attorney, an interpreter or a family member, and your service animal.

On the day

Arrive 15 minutes early for security screening – you must show a valid government ID to enter the building. No weapons or sharp objects, and no food or drinks except water in a sealable bottle. You may not be called exactly at your appointment time; at the window, staff review your documents and explain your options based on your travel date.

Not traveling within 14 days? Apply locally

If you travel in more than 2 weeks, expedited service (2–3 weeks, +$60) or routine service (4–6 weeks) is usually the way to go; allow up to 2 more weeks for mailing. Eligible adults can also renew online or by mail.

Routine and expedited applications (Form DS-11 for first-time adults and children) are accepted at passport acceptance facilities across Dallas – many post offices, public libraries and county clerk offices. Use the official locator to find one and check whether it needs an appointment:

We don't copy the facility list; it changes often, so the official locator is the source of truth.
